Born in London, Dr Oliver Thomson qualified as an osteopath with a BSc (Hons) degree in Osteopathy from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine and is registered with the profession’s regulatory body, the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). He has extensive experience in treating and managing a range of painful musculoskeletal conditions, especially back pain and sciatica. He has practiced in London for over 13 years and together with his wife Sarah, he is one of the Directors of BodyMatters Clinic, a multidisciplinary clinic situated in Belsize Park, northwest London NW3.
Having a background in sports injuries, Dr Thomson went on to complete a Master's degree in Sports and Exercise Rehabilitation from St Mary’s University, and then gained his PhD in osteopathy in 2013 from the Clinical Research Centre for Health Professions at the University of Brighton. His research investigated how osteopaths make clinical decisions and the different approaches that they take when examining, treating and managing patients during their day-to-day practice. Dr Oliver Thomson is an internationally renowned lecturer and researcher, and has authored over 30 academic papers that have been published in peer-reviewed research journals. He is also a peer-reviewer for several research journals and is an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine.
In addition to his clinical role at BodyMatters Clinic, Dr Thomson also works as an Associate Professor at the University College of Osteopathy, where he leads the PhD course . He is one of a very small number of osteopaths awarded a Professorship title in the UK and worldwide, and Dr Thomson is considered one of the leading authorities on osteopathic practice and research, and he continues to disseminate worldwide on the subjects of back pain, clinical reasoning, evidence based practice and qualitative research, and the importance in developing these areas to ensure safe and high quality osteopathic care for patients.
Dr Thomson works as a research consultant, and is involved a several research projects investigating back pain, clinical reasoning and the practice of osteopathy. He regularly lectures in the UK and abroad on postgraduate courses and conferences. Combined, these activities enable him to keep up to date with the most recent research in biopsychosocial aspects of back pain, sciatica, osteopathy and musculoskeletal care.
