In addition to being an experienced osteopath and researcher, Dr Thomson has held several teaching and lecturing positions at educational institutions in the UK and Scandinavia. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University College of Osteopathy (formally the British School of Osteopathy), and leads the research teaching for the full time undergraduate course and the varied postgraduate osteopathy programs, and also contributes to the research strategy at UCO.

His main areas of teaching are:

  • Clinical management of back pain and sciatica
  • Clinical reasoning and decision making
  • Clinical application of the biopsychosocial model
  • Evidence based practice in osteopathy
  • Research methods, including qualitative research and grounded theory method

Dr Thomson is frequently invited to act as an external examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate osteopathy courses in the UK and overseas. He has experience in the design, development and critical reviewing/approval of osteopathy course curricula and osteopathy programmes. Dr Thomson regularly holds postgraduate workshops and lectures on clinical reasoning, grounded theory and qualitative research at universities in the UK and internationally.
